Sentence Fragments: Skill in Context
There are two parts to this assignment: identifying
and correcting sentence fragments in some pretty messy drafts, and
translating iChat and AIM (instant message) texts (which are typically
full of fragments) into grammatically correct texts.
Part 1:
As preparation for the task of recognizing and repairing fragment
problems in your essay drafts, we turn now to passages of student
writing that are in need of repair work. Revise each
sentence in the text boxes below. Note that some sentences
will need substantial revising to make sense, then, see if your
corrections are similar to ours.

Part 2:
More and more students are "texting" and "i-m'ing" (instant messaging)
their friends to communicate quickly and efficiently. However,
the rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation go out the window
in these messages. A whole new language has risen up for texting;
one can even find online instant message dictionaries, and translator
applications like transl8it.com. See if you can translate the text
message below into grammatical English:
My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr
3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc."
